Laundry Room Makeover Update and Comparison Traps

Sorry to have left you hanging! I guess I should give you a little update on the current status of my One Room Challenge Farmhouse Glam Laundry Room Makeover. In short, I guess you could say I BFF'd the heck out of it. Big Fat Failed. HA!

While I failed to complete the challenge, I wouldn't say that I've failed the makeover part of it. What can I say? Life has a way of happening regardless of room makeover challenges. The laundry room is still waiting for a new light to be installed. The floating shelf I envisioned still hasn't materialized. I have some of the finishing details DIY projects complete, but I still have a couple more left on the to-do list. Instead of rushing through it, I'm going to keep working on it little by little until it's done, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

How do you handle comparison???

How do you handle it when your well made plans and goals don't happen the way you thought they would? I try to give myself grace (and eat some good chocolate), but for this perfectionist it's hard not to beat myself up over it. It's a learning process, and one that seems to be an ever repeating theme in my life! Comparing myself to the other pretty rooms in the challenge is hard not to do. "Why can't I get my you-know-what together and pull it all together like everyone else" (um, full-time mom of 2 small kids, that's why!). Or my favorite: "Their room is SO much prettier than mine ever will be".

Comparison and self doubt will eat you up and spit you out.

I am currently participating in a group study based on the book, Comparison Trap.

The study couldn't have come at a better time! It's a great reminder, and has some great exercises in how to avoid falling into the trap. It's definitely a book I would recommend if you find yourself struggling with comparison, which if we're being honest we all do from time to time.

Comparison Trap Study by Sandra Stanley

I whipped up this reminder to keep on my mantle for the next few days while I focus on finishing my laundry room makeover. I will never measure up to others when I compare myself to them, and the joy of working on my project will be overshadowed if I allow myself to go there! Maybe you need this reminder too? You can find the printable PDF here. (Just a quick reminder that it's copywrited and for personal use only. Not for resale and not to be altered or used in other designs. Thanks!)

Just in case you're thinking that my fireplace mantle is so pretty and my living room must be clean and organized and spotless...let me pull back from the "pretty picture" frame and show you what life is like at our house sometimes.

What a room looks like beyond the close up pretty picture.

There's even more of a mess beyond that photo...I've learned to embrace the mess with small kids constantly making messes faster than can be picked up. My coffee mug is just chilling on the side table (dirty), and that table has pen and crayon and permanent ink art scribbles all over it thanks to a very cute two year old. Looks like someone left their PJs on the floor (because that someone decided to strip down in the middle of the living room). The fireplace tile has a large chip out of it thanks to an accident with a jackhammer when we were remodeling and tearing out the floors. The fireplace remodel hasn't happened yet. Toys seem to migrate to the living room and multiply. There's even a breakfast plate with a half-eaten pancake on it somewhere in that mix. Whew!!!

Please don't think for a second that my house is photo-ready (ever!) at the drop of a hat. I sincerely hope that while I love to share projects and home decor ideas and inspire you in your own decorating and DIY journey, please don't think that I live some charmed life! I think we all struggle with the same basic self-imposed comparisons. Embrace the season of life that you're currently in. There will be days (and years) that it feels like you can't get on top of things. That's OK! You will get there eventually if you keep plugging away at it. Just remember that the pretty pictures you see on Pinterest usually tell a different story if you also saw the pulled back photo.

  1. I know you wrote this a long time ago, but I can't believe that no one commented. Good for you! I admit- I was looking for the final ORC product. I found this post instead and I applaud you for your honesty. Being the mama of two little people is all the challenge you can be expected to handle! I'm sure you do the decorating and blogging because you love those things too and need the creative expression in the midst of motherhood. But, you owe us (your readers) nothing! Do it because it's fun and forget the rest! :-) I came to your blog to see your Laura Ingalls Wilder quote- it's lovely and so. are. you. <3
